Tuesday 14th MayThe WalkWhen we got off the bus at Mecina, the first arduous step involved a walk of some 200 metres (on a level concrete road!), before arriving at Mecinilla, where we stopped for a well-deserved coffee at a little bar. Most of us resisted the temptation to try the Spanish worker's breakfast of Sol y Sombra (coffee and a brandy), remembering the walk ahead. Since we had started off in a bus, and the Capileira dogs had not mastered the art of stowing away, we were dogless when arriving in Mecina. But the dogs had clearly phoned ahead to their colleagues, because we were immediately selected by a Mecina dog that escorted us for the rest of the day. Picnic Lunch was taken under the welcome shade of oak trees in the middle of a grassy meadow. Towards the end of the walk, the group split into two, the sporty ones electing to take on an extra climb to Pitres, the sensible ones choosing to take the shorter course back to the bar in Mecinilla - and being serenaded by nightingales on the way. |
