Introduction
The purpose of this site is to celebrate a week spent on an "Andalucian
Adventures" holiday on May 12th - 19th 2002, at Capileira, a small village
high in the Alpujarras in Spain's Sierra Nevada.
This was a walking holiday, based on a single centre, designed for a small
group - in our case numbering 13 (12 from UK, 1 from Australia) plus
leaders/guides Jeremy and José-Miguel.

Speaking for myself, the holiday was a great
success - a mesmerisingly beautiful region with very rich plant, bird and
animal life, a vibrant local culture, perfect Spring weather, great company,
good local cuisine with regional ingredients, comfortable accommodation,
efficient organisation, challenging walks, etc. - all in all providing a total
contrast to our normal existence!
I hope this site will serve to:
- bring back happy memories to those who attended
- serve as a repository for our photos and reminiscences
- show families and friends our collected impressions
- give others who may be thinking of visiting the region, or of booking a
similar holiday, a flavour of what it might be like
Please note: in offering this site, I should stress I have no connection
with Andalucian Adventures, the company organising the holiday.
Personal Highlights
- Watching a well-organised set of business-like people degenerate into a
state in which they were totally incapable of making the simplest of decisions
- this state, commonly known as "switching-off", was reached after
about 12 hours and persisted for the entire week. Naturally this made Jeremy's
job of asking us to select from the menu for the following day very difficult,
and he generally avoided posing us any questions requiring thought.
- Choosing "Dog of the Day" for our walk. To be more
correct, the wretched animals chose us, instinctively aware that every
English-speaking group would contain at least one soft-hearted animal-lover
(Helen?). Perhaps the animals had a secret agreement amongst themselves,
because they never seemed to fight for the privilege, but took it in turns.
Once we were selected, the dog followed us for the entire walk, not begging,
but accepting any morsels from the picnic.
- Observing José-Miguel slyly teasing Jessica and Victoria. Generally
he dug himself into a deep pit, and ended up getting much the worse of it - and
all the men in the group, in a thoroughly cowardly fashion, ignored his appeals
for support...
Sayings of the Week (remembered by Bob)
- "The bad part is over" - (but the worst is to come)
- "There is only one climb today" - (but it lasts all day)
