Control Unit in Trouble |

Having purchased the batteries and established that the engine starts very well, I was disappointed today to discover that the cutout switch (the large handle at the bottom of the picture) refused to work at all. The power remained resolutely cut off. I fetched a voltmeter and checked the output of the batteries, but that was fine at 25volts. The problem was clearly the switch. After consulting the manual, I tried to release the 4 bolts that held the cutout switch. 3 came away after a struggle, but the 4th took nearly 2 hours of effort, and eventually yielded to WD 40 and a screwdriver used with an adjustable spanner to give extra leverage. The insde of the unit revealed some very dirty green-looking bronze contacts, so I spent 20 minutes cleaning them up with fine emery paper and sprayed them with WD40. At some future point I will remove the entire control unit and give it a thorough spring clean. Once back in place the cutout worked instantly! So I was able to test the engine again. Now, if I could solve the sticky accelerator pedal! I crawled underneath the front axle while the engine was running and pulled the accelerator linkage several times. The engine duly revved and subsided, but there was no obvious sticking point or loose spring. Back to the workshop manual.... |
